It has been awhile since I last
reported on the National Animal Identification System (NAIS).
This update will attempt to catch the reader up on what has
been taking place.
On 3/22/06, an article was
disseminated on Region8pygmygoats@yahoogroups.com by Stacy
Atkinson, which was provided to her by Bill Sanda, Executive
Director of the Weston A. Price Foundation. This article was
written for the Winter 2005/Spring 2006 issue of Wise
Traditions Journal. The article describes the development of
NAIS, USDA’s role in its development, the USDA’s intent to
identify premises, animals and their movements, NAIS’
implementation schedule, USDA’s claim of confidentiality of
any acquired information, and finally, a variety of
arguments on why NAIS should be opposed. Since I am a member
of the Region8pygmygoats group, I have a copy of the whole
article, some 9 pages in length. For further information
including a copy of the article, contact Stacy Atkinson
(formerly Hamilton) at
stacy@lonepalmetto.com.
It is recommended that a number of
other websites be visited for the latest on NAIS:
•
http://animalid.aphis.usda.gov/nais/about/index.shtml -
This is a short, 2-page article describing USDA’s position
on NAIS. It is the latest one on their website.
•
http://www.aphis.usda.gov/newsroom/content/2006/03/aintag_vs.shtml
- This is the latest USDA news release on Animal
Identification Numbers. The last paragraph of the first
paragraph is worthy of note. “...The initial implementation
of AINs focuses on cattle. The use of AINs with other types
of identification devices (e.g. implants) used in other
species will be considered as the NAIS species working
groups finalize their recommendations for utilizing the AIN.”
•
http://animalid.aphis.usda.gov/nais/audiences/goats/index.shtml
- This page describes the establishment of “working groups,”
and provides a link to the listing of Goats Work Group
members. It should be noted that NPGA is represented on this
group.
•
http://www.usanimalid.com/wgoverview.htm - This a
2-page document on the NAIS Goat Working Group website which
provides an overview on what the group has been discussing.
There are several entries in red on the first page which
provide additional information:
